How could I say 'I love you'
if I don't know what that means?
For Love is not like those
warm movie endings,
or what they say
in magazines.
Its so much more than
a racing heart,
sweaty palms
and blushing cheeks.
Its the choice that's made
to stay committed,
as it gets harder
week after week.
Love is sleeping less
than everyone else
when you call
'just to talk',
it doesn't keep score
of 'who did what',
or whether it was 'your fault'.
Love always looks
for the best,
although you don't show it
all the time,
it doesn't criticize or taunt
in times of trouble,
it whispers
"You will be fine."
I'm telling you now
I don't love you -
not yet,
not even close.
But I'm trying so hard
for your affection,
I write this in poetry,
and not in prose.
I want to learn
what it means to love
so I can love you
as it should be.
So don't be afraid
to ask yourself,
if you really do love me.
